COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITY FUND GRANT AWARDED

In August 2014 FWPP was awarded the $500,000 Community Opportunity Fund Grant from SF Park and Rec!  We are very proud of this accomplishment and would like to thank everyone who helped us to submit the application for this very competitive grant.

STATE ASSEMBLY CERTIFICATE OF EXCELLENCE

The California State Assembly awarded the Friends of West Portal Playground a Certificate of Recognition to honor the community efforts to Reimage, Renovate and Redesign the West Portal Playground. Assemblyman Phil Ting, presented the certificate at our “Get Ready to Freeze” event held on June 21, 2014 - the day of summer in San Francisco!

Get Ready to Freeze Party

In honor of the first day of summer in San Francisco, the event included craft tables, “freeze tag”, a parade of winter costumes, and a snow machine! It was a true community effort: a story hour led by the children’s librarian from the West Portal Public Library; baked goods donated by neighbors, pizza donated by Goat Hill Pizza; and our own Assemblyman, Phil Ting, judging the ‘snowman’ building contest. In addition to hosting, Assemblyman Ting and Supervisor Scott Weiner and over 300 people attended the event. All agreed that the highlight of the day was the “Frozen” sign along.

La Boulange Public Grant

Our wonderful, new West Portal Avenue business, La Boulange has awarded Friends of West Portal Playground a $5000 La Boulange Public Award.  This was their first grant.  We are delighted that they chose our project!

TOUR WITH MAYOR LEE

In April, we were invited to present our project to Mayor Lee, his staff, Rec and Park, DPW and Supervisor Yee.  They even took the time to touring the playground and review our designs.  It was a wonderful day, and we felt really honored.

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITY FUND DRAFT SUBMITTED!

On Friday April 4, 2014 we submitted our 100+ page draft application for the COF grant.  We want to thank everyone who helped with the grant application process.   The application looks fantastic and the beautiful letters of support we obtained from the children at West Portal Elementary are included.  In the next few weeks we expect to get feedback from SF Rec and Park.  We will then make changes and submit the final on June 5, 2014.

COMMUNITY MEETING 3

WEDNESDAY 3/5/2014 - WEST PORTAL CLUBHOUSE

We hosted another wonderful community meeting!  During the meeting we gave a project status, show the updated designs, obtain feedback and answer questions.  We were lucky to have SF Park Alliance and Rec and Park attend as well.

We also had a our first I SUPPORT Photobooth setup and obtained lots of great pictures.

PARK CLEANUP DAYS

Saturday April 5, 2014

Thank you to the Boy Scouts for all your help during our 'Earth Day' clean up!

This time, we even helped clean the library's garden.  It was a beautiful day, with a great turnout.  We picked up trash on Lenox, weeded the picnic area and raked the sand.

Saturday March 8, 2014

What a wonderful day!  The sun was shinning and there were tons of smiles as we cleaned the playground equipment and sand.  The sand has been raked and removed all debris. Another fantastic day with a great turn out!

Saturday Feb 8, 2014

RAIN OR SHINE!   A group of 13 volunteers cleaned, weeded and pruned the planting strips along Lenox Way.  It was a very wet and rainy day, but the crew still managed to fill the entire truck.

COMMUNITY MEETING 2

Saturday February 1, 2014 - West Portal Clubhouse
The well attended event brought together over 70 people including Supervisor Yee.
It featured a concept design, detail boards and illustrations.  Attendees were encouraged to ask questions and “vote” for design features with small green/red stickers.  A handout was distributed with a feedback form.  A local vendor donated their time to run a craft station for kids to obtain their ideas.
